A group of seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
